PlaceRaider: The Military Smartphone Malware Designed to Steal Your Life

The power of modern smartphones is one of the technological wonders of our age. These devices carry a suite of sensors capable of monitoring the environment in detail, powerful data processors and the ability to transmit and receive information at high rates.

So it's no surprise that smartphones are increasingly targeted by malware designed to exploit this newfound power. Examples include software that listens for spoken credit card numbers or uses the on-board accelerometers to monitor credit card details entered as keystrokes.

Today Robert Templeman at the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Crane, Indiana, and a few pals at Indiana University reveal an entirely new class of 'visual malware' capable of recording and reconstructing a user's environment in 3D. This then allows the theft of virtual objects such as financial information, data on computer screens and identity-related information.

Templeman and co call their visual malware PlaceRaider and have created it as an app capable of running in the background of any smartphone using the Android 2.3 operating system.

Tonight : Gluklya @ Akinci Gallery - Wings of Migrants

AKINCI GALERY and IMES are pleased to invite you to a viewing and a round table discussion of the art project Wings of Migrants. The project is a collaboration between the artist Natalya Pershina-Yakimanskaya ‘Gluklya’ (Factory of Found Clothes, St. Petersburg, Russia) and Olga Sezneva (Institute for Migration and Ethnic Studies, UvA). Wings of Migrants is a video installation which investigates – in a uniquely created setting of cultural encounter – the dynamics of interaction between representatives of Russia’s ethno-national elite and migrants from Central Asia employed in the construction work. As an art form, Russian classical ballet is characterized by the desire for order, beauty and harmony. As a cultural phenomenon, it incorporates the idea of empire, power and discipline. As an institution, it continues to be dominated by ethnic Russians. Construction work, in contradistinction, is perceived as a polluted, disorderly, and undesirable activity. As in many other countries, construction workers are irregular, undocumented migrants, and are received with disrespect and discrimination. In Wings of Migrants the two groups meet and collaborate in the creation of a dance performance. How does this encounter unfold and what happens as its result? What do the participants learn from each other, what do they reject, and how do they change as they dance together? How can the arts and artists intervene in social problems and political reality?

The project starts from the dream to organize the “Theatre of migrants” in St-Petersburg . Imagine if there can happened ? Monprints and graphics there is a continuation of the research about the social change happened in Russia with the migrants appearance .The installation consists from the : 3 videos , 4 whatecolours, 3 dresses , 10 monoprints and the wall with death migrants statistic ,written by hand .It is the collaborative work . All this done with somebody ,that s why it s called Factory of Found project . I am trying to work as a small institution.))

Meet Justin, a 9-Year-Old Abstract Expressionist Painter From Indiana Who is Also a Horse

Adonna Combs- As an artist and equestrian, I saw the creative possibilities that Justin could offer with his inquisitiveness. He is a horse who has his nose in everything, I “harnessed” his creative energy through painting. He loves to use his big lips to move or pick up objects. I thought teaching him to paint would keep him interested and out of trouble. As it turns out, he enjoys “playing” with the brushes and making brush strokes; sometimes he wiggles his lip in the paint on the paper. The abstract painting process is collaboration between us. I choose the colors and brushes and he spontaneously paints them to the paper or canvas. Each painting is unique and expresses Justin's equine energy. HERE

Change of Pace: TinyDuino Microcontroller Is Smaller Than a Quarter

Arduino is probably the world’s most popular open source physical computing platform. The little microcontrollers show up in everything from wild art projects to serious home automation efforts. It’s great and all, but couldn’t it be … smaller? Electrical engineer Ken Burns thought so, and got to work on the TinyDuino.

The Test Drive - Avital Ronnell

How To See The Future - Warren Ellis

...

The Olympus Mons mountain on Mars is so tall and yet so gently sloped that, were you suited and supplied correctly, ascending it would allow you to walk most of the way to space. Mars has a big, puffy atmosphere, taller than ours, but there’s barely anything to it at that level. 30 Pascals of pressure, which is what we get in an industrial vacuum furnace here on Earth. You may as well be in space. Imagine that. Imagine a world where you could quite literally walk to space.

That’s actually got a bit more going for it, as an idea, than exotic red deserts and canals. Imagine living in a Martian culture for a moment, where this thing is a presence in the existence of an entire sentient species. A mountain that you cannot see the top of, because it’s a small world and the summit wraps behind the horizon. Imagine settlements creeping up the side of Olympus Mons. Imagine battles fought over sections of slope. Generations upon generations of explorers dying further and further up its height, technologies iterated and expended upon being able to walk to within leaping distance of orbital space. Manufactured normalcy would suggest that, if we were the Martians, we would find this completely dull within ten years and bitch about not being able to simply fart our way into space.

What Good Does Painting Do?: Is Painting a Selfish Act?

A painting friend recently told me that she stopped painting because she came to believe that it was a very self centered, selfish pursuit. This is a common perception, and one, I believe, many painters battle, from without and within. I think many of my friends, relatives, and acquaintances assumed that at some point I would have grown-up and abandoned this silly distraction/obsession. It takes so much time, attention, and effort - and - for what end? As someone who has dreams, hopes, and aspirations for changing the world for the better, and who is committed to her family, the question today is: Isn't painting just a huge waste of time and energy that could be used for better/more productive ends? This question concerns: a) Our relationships with friends, family, and co-workers, and b)Our larger actions in the world: Shouldn't we use our time and energy to help make the world a better place to live? The Tyranny of Algorithms

Do we want a world where a software program

In "Player Piano," his 1952 dystopian novel, Kurt Vonnegut rebelled against automation. For Vonnegut, the metaphor of the player piano—where the instrument plays itself, without any intervention from humans—stood for all that was wrong with the cold, mechanical and efficiency-maximizing environment around him. Report: Eastern European Hackers More Sophisticated Than Asian Counterparts

A new report from a cyber security firm has concluded that Eastern European hackers are launching more sophisticated attacks on U.S. businesses than their Asian counterparts, in part because hackers in Russia and nearby countries work in a more nimble, mercenary fashion.

The report from Tokyo-based Trend Micro Inc. compares two of the main sources of global computer attacks – and finds distinct differences, notably that the Eastern European hackers are more often “hired guns’’ trying to steal money, while East Asian hackers tend to be part of larger organizations intent on swiping corporate or government secrets.

Madonna by Otto Von Wernherr - Cosmic Climb

In 1981, when Madonna was hard-up for money she took a job singing back-up for avant garde German artist Otto Von Wernherr. She lent her vocals to three of his songs, "Wild Dancing", "Cosmic Climb", and "We Are The Gods". Her actual participation on the tracks was minimal consisting of repetitive chorus lines behind Otto's monotone, spoken, flat and German accented vocals. When Madonna hit the big time, he remixed the songs to bring Madonna's voice out to the front of the mixes and released them on the UK label, Receiver Records which is now marketed as the package "Madonna (& Otto Von Wernherr) In The Beginning" and features extended dance mixes of the songs. The tracks and Madonna's voice are all horrific and his countless re-releases and picture discs are a rip-off. If you're a completist collector, you'll probably want to have at least one version of it.

What Was the Hipster?

If I speak of the degeneration of our most visible recent subculture, the hipster, it’s an awkward occasion. Someone will point out that hipsters are not dead, they still breathe, they live on my block. Yet it is evident that we have reached the end of an epoch in the life of the type. Its evolution lasted from 1999 to 2009, though it has shifted appearance dramatically over the decade. It survived this year; it may persist. Indications are everywhere, however, that we have come to a moment of stocktaking. HERE

Dear Mr. Sir,

REQUEST FOR ASSISTANCE-STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL

I am Dr. Bakare Tunde, the cousin of Nigerian Astronaut, Air Force Major Abacha Tunde. He was the first African in space when he made a secret flight to the Salyut 6 space station in 1979. He was on a later Soviet spaceflight, Soyuz T-16Z to the secret Soviet military space station Salyut 8T in 1989. He was stranded there in 1990 when the Soviet Union was dissolved. His other Soviet crew members returned to earth on the Soyuz T-16Z, but his place was taken up by return cargo. There have been occasional Progrez supply flights to keep him going since that time. He is in good humor, but wants to come home.

We Are Now One Year Away From Global Riots, Complex Systems Theorists Say

What’s the number one reason we riot? The plausible, justifiable motivations of trampled-upon humanfolk to fight back are many—poverty, oppression, disenfranchisement, etc—but the big one is more primal than any of the above. It’s hunger, plain and simple. If there’s a single factor that reliably sparks social unrest, it’s food becoming too scarce or too expensive. So argues a group of complex systems theorists in Cambridge, and it makes sense.

In a 2011 paper, researchers at the Complex Systems Institute unveiled a model that accurately explained why the waves of unrest that swept the world in 2008 and 2011 crashed when they did. The number one determinant was soaring food prices. Their model identified a precise threshold for global food prices that, if breached, would lead to worldwide unrest.

The MIT Technology Review explains how CSI’s model works: “The evidence comes from two sources. The first is data gathered by the United Nations that plots the price of food against time, the so-called food price index of the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the UN. The second is the date of riots around the world, whatever their cause.” Plot the data, and it looks like this:

Stand With Occupy

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

Occupy Wall Street (OWS) is holding a three-day convergence of education, celebration and resistance from September 15-17 to mark the one-year anniversary of the movement. The eyes of the world will be on New York City during this period. We, the undersigned, are writing you today as fellow intellectuals, academics, and artists to ask you to show your support for OWS by joining us in the squares and the streets. Whether or not you will be in New York, we ask you to sign and circulate this letter in a spirit of solidarity.

Over the past year, OWS has helped refocused the world’s attention on economic injustice. It has transformed the cultural landscape and expanded the political imagination through ideas of the 99%, the 1%, occupation, general assemblies, direct democracy, and more. Better yet, it has offered hope, a new means of radical critique, and a place from which to advocate for fundamental rather than cosmetic change.

It’s time for those who are privileged enough to think and write and create and teach for a living—particularly those of us with full-time faculty positions or secure careers—to step up and be counted. We have earned academic and cultural capital from espousing radical positions. Now is the time to lend our support in visible ways to the commitment shown by the Occupy movement and to help it grow and evolve.

Germans refuse first aid

Few Germans are ready to help in an emergency case with a cardiac massage. The findings of a recent study of the Society of Anesthesiology. An estimated 10,000 people die each year, although they could be saved. The most important thing was to keep the brain and the organs of a cardiac massage alive..."That in Germany only 15 percent of pedestrians are willing to make a heart massage is truly remarkable - in a bad way "

- The chest press firmly, about two inches deep at a speed of 100 strokes per minute.
- The needed rhythm provides appropriately the song "Stayin' Alive" by the Bee Gees.
"It will break ribs, but in contrast to the brain, you can fix it," says a doctor.
- The mouth-to-mouth resuscitation (artificial respiration) , of which many are disgusted is of secondary importance in the revival.

The current study demonstrates for the first time that people over 60 are less resuscitated by laymen, even though they have the same chance of survival. Only at the age of 90 years, the probability that the resuscitation is useful, gets less.

Contemporary art deserves its name insofar as it manifests its own contemporaneity—and this is not simply a matter of being recently made or displayed. Thus, the question “What is contemporary art?” implicates the question “What is the contemporary?” How could the contemporary as such be shown?

The Assange case - Craig Murray

Many thanks indeed to “Me in Us” for this transcript.

00:12 ONN: Hello. We’re here today at the home of Craig Murray, the whistleblower and former ambassador to Uzbekistan. Craig, thank you for being here with us on ON today. On Sunday you spoke out publicly defending Julian Assange in giving a speech in front of the Ecuadorean assembly. What made you want to stand up and be counted as among his supporters?

CRAIG MURRAY: Well, the main reason is that I’ve been a whistleblower myself and active with other whistleblowers, and I’ve seen so many whistleblowers fitted up with false charges, and as soon as anybody blows the whistle, particularly on any aspects of, if you like, neoconservative foreign policy and war, you’re going to get fitted up and you’re going to get defamed with false charges, and if you’re male I think in every case those charges are going to involve sexual allegations. So I could just see, if you like, a miscarriage of justice in the process of being done, and I wanted to do anything I can to help stop it.

01:16 ONN: You said that individual whistleblowers are not charged with political offenses, they are fit up with criminal ones. Would you care to elaborate on that?
