Knowledge is power...
When I was young my father said to me:
"Knowledge is Power....Francis Bacon"
I understood it as "Knowledge is power, France is Bacon".
For more than a decade I wondered over the meaning of the second part and what was the surreal linkage between the two? If I said the quote to someone, "Knowledge is power, France is Bacon" they nodded knowingly. Or someone might say, "Knowledge is power" and I'd finish the quote "France is Bacon" and they wouldn't look at me like I'd said something very odd but thoughtfully agree. I did ask a teacher what did "Knowledge is power, France is bacon" meant and got a full 10 minute explanation of the Knowledge is power bit but nothing on "France is bacon". When I prompted further explanation by saying "France is Bacon?" in a questioning tone I just got a "yes". at 12 I didn't have the confidence to press it further. I just accepted it as something I'd never understand.
It wasn't until years later I saw it written down that the penny dropped.

Defense Industry: Keep Paying Us or the Economy Dies
Defense giant Lockheed Martin had a totally sweet quarter, raking in $700 million and looking forward to the same this time next year. So it raises eyebrows when Lockheed’s anointed mouthpieces predict mass economic disaster if Congress touches the defense budget.
On Tuesday, the aerospace industry put out a report saying that chopping the defense budget would put over a million Americans out of work. Cuts that could total up to a trillion dollars over 10 years would “devastate the economy and the defense industrial base and undermine the national security of our country,” said Marion Blakeley, president of the Aerospace Industries Association, which sponsored the report.

Wikipedia Talk:Pregnancy
There is a battle raging on Wikipedia right now. Should the article about "pregnancy" feature an image of a clothed pregnant woman, or a nude pregnant woman? So far, it looks like the nude woman is in the lead, but that offends many readers with more conservative values. If only there were a software feature that could let readers decide what class of images they're willing to have exposed to them, right?

A Letter from Occupy Amsterdam ( received via media team mailinglist)
Hello all,
with this letter I want to annoucne that I liek to call on all responsible members in our group to come together, as soon as possible, with also the external supporters of our common goals to discuss and implement the following:
- organizational model and structure
- deciding exactly what jobs we have, what they are about, and who will do them
- discuss a brief simple set pof houserules and work rules
- set up communicationlines that function and are followed and respected
today I have been working with Robin all night to try and save whatever is left of the mess of our organization and see hwo to implement that
when he went to bed I tried to get everybody up to take care of the CNN crew, and help make this into a success
then I spent the entire day – apart from 6 hours of sleep in between – on helping people on teh chat and trying to reach people in the mediatent which was hopeless and not successfull because simply NOBODY did his job there, NOBODY moderated teh chat when I was off sleeping and NOBODY was available or reachable for all kinds of issues and questions from many people
and on top of it all, I get yelled at, have had several deadthreats against me from idiots on the chat and a membetr of this list (!!!) and have been treated with utter disrespect and rudeness
I have witnessed mediapersonel bring in friends in teh tent to hang out, drink alcohol and smoke joints;
I have seen perople completely disregarrding protocols and policies that were discussed and implemented
I have met incredible rudeness, lazyness, disinterest and plain stupidity from some members who just do whatever pleases them
I have seen our g ood name and our image to the public being ruined by members who fidn iut funny to film junks acting crazy for the live cam, who think it is helpfull to openly attack fellow moderators in teh chat, or just decide against an implemented order on the chat
I have seen vital important plans an doptions go to runs because soem members decided ‘they diudnt feel like doin what was asked’ or just felt ‘they wanted to do something else and well just fuck it’
I have witnessed saturdaynight how our crewmember Gijs was very ill, lying on teh ground, and several members just playing stupid clips and music extremely loud, some whiel enjoying their joints, some intoxicated with teh smell of alcohol around them, and then o top of it some felt it was a perfecvt time to play porn!!!
all of this in teh working space that needed attention and where there was always work to be done, urgently
I have seen many people desperately trying to get answers, to ask questions, and to address issues, to help an dsupport us, but just walking on a dead end, against a wall, because there simply isnt anyone who listens in the tent (literally)
sometimes it seems – as Dmitri said very wisely last sunday – that the leaches rule in this camp, also in our team! There seems to be a complete lack of basic respect, a lack of udnerstanding what is at stake here, and a complete lack of knowing what RESPONSIBILLITY means
I have invested tremendously these 10 days to support occupy, truely belieivng in i t; made huge sacrifices to get therem, brings tons of food and supplies, an entire suitcase full of warm clothes, another with first aid materials, fire extinguishers for our mediatent, brought my own chairs, gastanks, borrowed money to finance things, bought cases for the mediatent, and spend mopre then 120 euro on cellphonecosts
in return I have not heard anyone thank me for all my efforts, nor for what I brought, nor for all teh time I spend there to jkeep saving occupy, kill fires, help people out and make it work
apart from some people like Ernst, Marc, Geert, Dennis, Robin, Suzanne, Niek, Benoit, Dmitri (forgive me if I forget one or two) I have encountered a complete lack of any respect whatsoever
and the endresult at this moment is that people from all sides are falling apart, peopel in our crews get burned up easily uinder all teh stress, and ewe loose most of our support in teh country
THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE!!!!!
This is not a free-play-camping!
this is not a place to act out, date, use drugs, get drunk and just do whatever pleases you!
our future is at stake and it seems at this moment we are about to loose teh battle
after a long night of complete insanity in teh chat, of endless trolls, grievers and nutcases,
after not getting any help whatsopever from anyone present from teh team, in fact got dizzed by soem and sabotaged i n my work by some,
after retrying with them time after time after time, I decided to klet them figur it out for themselves
I unbanned everybody, and removed restruictions to login
immediately ALL the trolls came back and started talking their own crap about all kinds of stuff except Occupy Amsterdam
I find it impossible to do my job under these circumstances!
further more, I notice there are all kinds of mediagroups, communication between eachother is at least troubling and challenging, informations not shared, and at the moment I think there are more tools and options for communicatiosn set up then I can think off, most of them only shared by small numbers, leaving many out, and therefor keeping teh same chaos
I am convinced many of you are incredibly motivated and have worked their asses off all these days and I deeply respect that, same as I did from day 1
but this MUST stop immediately, and we have to get organized, get communications running, and develop a way of behaving taht is helpfull for our common goal, an drespectful of eachother and our people in teh field, and the country as a whole
if we don’t, Occupy Amsterdam is finished
please feel free to contact me on this letter or write the entire group
but in all cases, lets not forget our common goal
and the incredible challenge and urgency of our occupation
we MUST win this battle!!!
best wishes for all, including the guy who wants to kill me

interesting quote by Philip K. Dick
"We hypostatize information into objects. Rearrangement of objects is change in the content of the information; the message has changed. This is a language which we have lost the ability to read. We ourselves are a part of this language; changes in us are changes in the content of the information. We ourselves are information-rich; information enters us, is processed and is then projected outward once more, now in an altered form. We are not aware that we are doing this, that in fact this is all we are doing”

Could This Really Happen?
A new bill in Congress makes posting a video containing any copyrighted work a felony-- with up to 5 years in prison.
But wait... didn't Justin Bieber get famous by posting YouTube videos of himself singing copyrighted R&B songs? Yep. If this bill passes, he could get 5 years in jail.

Thirteen Observations made by Lemony Snicket while watching Occupy Wall Street from a Discreet Distance - Lemony Snicket
1. If you work hard, and become successful, it does not necessarily mean you are successful because you worked hard, just as if you are tall with long hair it doesn’t mean you would be a midget if you were bald.

Book review - Krzysztof Wodiczko
Personal Instrument, 1969
Personal Instrument, for example, consisted of a microphone, worn on the forehead, which retrieved sound from the environment while photo-receivers in gloves filtered the sound through the movement of the hand: closing the hands suppresses the sound, turning the hands to face the light opens up the sound channel, the photoreceivers on the right hand control the low-pitch filter and the ones on the left hand control the high-pitch. The resulting sound was perceived by the artist only through his headphones. By emphasizing selective listening, vital to a Polish citizen's survival at the time, Wodiczko intimated the prevalence of censored speech, registering "dissent of a system that fostered only one-directional critical thinking - listening over speech."

The Molecular Strike - Gerald Raunig
17 September 2011. A demonstration march through lower Manhattan chooses as the destination of its dérive a small park near the enormous construction site of the World Trade Center. Zuccotti Park is a formerly public, now privatized square belonging to the real estate corporation Brookfield Properties, named after its chairman John Zuccotti. On older maps of the financial district, however, this square has a different name: Liberty Plaza. The demonstrators have not chosen to occupy this territory because of a universalist invocation of freedom, but rather because they want to set a further component of the abstract machine in motion that has drawn lines of flight throughout the entire year, especially through the Mediterranean region...

Summary: Facebook says it is not required to give you a copy of some of your personal data as it could adversely affect the company’s trade secrets and intellectual property.
Update: I followed up with Palo Alto. Facebook: The law reasonably states you can’t have all your data.
An Austrian group called Europe versus Facebook has so far made 22 complaints regarding the social network’s practices. In the process, the organization has stumbled upon an important tidbit: Facebook says it is not required to give you a copy of some of your personal data if it deems doing so would adversely affect its trade secrets or intellectual property.MORE

Russian Sound 2011 vs British Sounds by JL Godard
Russian Sound, 2011 from chto delat on Vimeo.
british sounds by J-L-Godard from chto delat on Vimeo.
This film was inspired by the editing, audio and narrative techniques used by Jean-Luc Godard in his film British Sounds (1969). (It can be viewed here: vimeo.com/8118700.)
Our film is an attempt to find out whether the spirit (if not the letter) of Godard's experiments could be transferred to the suffocating reality of Russia on the eve of the 2011-2012 parliamentary and presidential elections. The film consists of a series of novellas that reflect on various aspects of politics and the life of society in today's Russia.
Godard's film was released during a boisterous, revolutionary period in British politics and society. It has been as a manifesto for a new agitational cinema that would be capable of describing the totality of social transformations in their dialectical emergence. Are we capable, at the height of political and social reaction, of critically sharing Godard's vision and aesthetics?

How to make a new identity - Heath Bunting
Date: Thursday, 20 October 2011
Time: 10:30 AM - 5:00 PM
Location: Netherlands Media Art Institute (NIMk)
Keizersgracht 264
Amsterdam
An identity is a mutable object. It’s negotiated between people, organizations, and institutions, formalized in documentation, actions, and possessions. In this workshop Heath Bunting (UK) shows how you create your own legal identity. As Bunting demonstrates, identities can be constructed over time by developing relationships to place a given “person” within a web of shopping cards, cell phones, bills, government correspondence, and other “personal” data. Identity Bureau challenges the idea of personhood by showing how materially produced an identity is.
Heath Bunting explores the porosity of borders. Often performing as an interventionist or prankster and finding form within everyday acts of resistance, Bunting's work reaches its public through systems of documentation and distribution including photography, print publishing and the web. Dismantling the divisions separating art and everyday life, Bunting prioritises information and action. His work is based on creating open and democratic systems by modifying communication technologies and social systems.
The workshop is limited to 15 participants. The participation fee is € 10,00 (€ 5,00 for students) including refreshments and entrance to the exhibition The Art of Hacking.
For more information and registration, please email to anouk@nimk.nl
Heath Bunting‘s work straddles various modes of action, documentation and visualisation. Bunting is best known for his involvement in the formation of the net.art movement in the 1990s and as a founder of irational.org. His practice may be viewed in parallel with the tendencies of historical movements such as Conceptual Art or the Situationist International. Dismantling the divisions separating art and everyday life, Bunting prioritises information and action. His work is based on creating open and democratic systems by modifying communication technologies and social systems. He explores the porosity of borders, both in the physical space and online.
