HPVS (Human Phantom Vibration Syndrome) - Christopher Baker

HPVS (Human Phantom Vibration Syndrome) from Christopher Baker on Vimeo.

HPVS (Human Phantom Vibration Syndrome) is a kinetic sculpture that considers the subtle, often-subconscious ways that mobile communication technologies shape our senses. The title references the recently discovered Human Phantom Vibration Syndrome — a syndrome wherein mobile phone users become hyper-attentive to their mobile devices, often experiencing phantom ringing sensations even in the absence of incoming calls or messages. This work carefully orchestrates the vibrations of a collection of mobile phones to produce a familiar yet quietly-disturbing cacophony.

  1. Ai, that is so much better than a work I am working on with mobile phone. So. Inspiration or bummer, I am not sure. Wonder what makes them vibrate; best case; they all have a number-provider and a computer calls them all in same timeframe. Come to think of it more, why are they hanging upside down? What I like about that is vague connotation to an animal carcas, still twichting after life.

  2. according to other pictures on the site he presents them in other ways as well. about the hanging upside down i have q's too. they are vibrating because an arduino board is "telling" them to do so...

  3. Hi all, just ran across your blog ... the Arduino communicates directly with the vibrating pager motors. The upside-down quality was just a by-product of hanging them upside down. I have been experimenting with several different ways of arranging them, but haven't completely settled yet ...

Did you all have other questions?
